L04

Have you ever felt that we don’t appreciate the older generation in our lives quite as much as we should? Or if we do then we rarely seem to record them in our photographs. There’s the incidental inclusion of them in the photos at a wedding or other family occasion, but other than that, don’t the every day lives of our elders go undocumented? And when do they ever get to be centre stage? Maybe you’re better than I am at photographing these special people. I’m far too good at putting it off until tomorrow. I appreciate that a lot of them may be camera-shy, but I’m not talking about posing for the camera with cheesey grins; I just mean hanging out with them for an hour or two and recording their every day life. Don’t put it off. Get your cameras out! I’m glad I did.

L01

She shares a birthday with The Queen. She also shares a name. Born Elizabeth Scully in 1926. Meet my Auntie Lil. She’s also my Godmother. And my mother’s Godmother. A special lady.

L03

Lil Coffey is a sacristan; a job she assumed full responsibility for when her husband Tom died in 1979. He was only 55; an age that seems ever younger to me as the years march on. I’m ridiculously hopeless at remembering dates but I will never forget the year Tom died. We were all due to go to see Pope John Paul during his visit to Ireland that week. Nobody in our family made it however, as everything got turned upside down. When my father turned up in my classroom in the Pres Primary and whispered to my teacher I knew that something was very seriously wrong. Lil could have been forgiven for turning into a bitter, cranky old lady from that day, but as you can probably tell from these photos she’s exactly the opposite; mind you, she can get cross and has the memory of an extremely remembering elephant!

L02

So, Lil turned 86 the other day and we had a lovely family gathering in her honour (thanks Kate!). The occasion gave me just the nudge I needed to get off my ass and take a few photos. Every day for more than fifty years Lil walks up and down to the local church to open and close it. She prepares it for daily mass and all the ceremonies; baptisms, wedding and funerals. She’s the heart and soul of this little church. Thankfully she has been persuaded to give up the weekly cleaning of the entire building but that was part of her duties for most of her life. You’d be handed a duster or a brush if you turned up at the wrong moment I tell ya. I spent a lot of my summers with Lil so had developed my own way of speeding the polishing by kinda launching my bottom onto the duster and sliding along the seats. Great fun but probably not the most efficient method. There were a LOT of pews though; and there were trees outside waiting to be climbed!

L05

I spent a lot of my tomboy childhood up a tree. In fact, when we were sharing memories of Lil at the party, that was one of mine: the day Lil told me in no uncertain terms to “get BACK up that tree!”. God bless her but she was forever telling me to get DOWN out of trees, or sheds, or other suitably dangerous places I chose to perch myself. But there happened to be a wedding in the church that day and I had climbed up the big tree in the churchyard in order to gain a good vantage point. It was summer time (and you know how hot the summers always were when you were young) so I was scantily clad in a pair of shorts and little else. You can imagine the scene just as the wedding couple and their guests emerged from the church in their finery, when this little tree urchin hung down with bits of twigs and leaves stuck to her long, unkempt hair and went “Hellloooo Lil!!” at the top of her voice. She was cross. Ooo boy was she cross!

L07

My favourite part of helping Lil in the church was the laying out of the vestments. Each of those drawers had different coloured vestments for various feasts and ceremonies, even for different days of the week; with varying levels of embroidered embellishments. She had a particular and skillful way of laying them out so that the priest could slip them on with the greatest of ease; fair spoilt them priests.

L08

Look at her the divil, she’s a terror for the climbing! She pulls out that bottom drawer in the sacristy to get up as far as the chalices. I suppose loosing her husband so young meant she had to learn to do things for herself. You’d come home and she’d have a room painted, a bathroom tiled or the back yard paved. Seriously. She never stops. Well, maybe a pause for a sherry every now and then. Or to tell a story. She’s the treasurer of most of the family sayings and stories. That’s another thing we should do more of: listen to our old people.

L06

So she didn’t get to see the Pope that time back in 1979 but he did honour her many years later with the prestigious Benemerenti Medal. Benemerenti means to a well- deserving person. After fifty years of service to the Catholic Church, Pope John Paul sent her the Benemerenti. I couldn’t think of anyone more well-deserving.

L09

For somebody of Auntie Lil’s generation, most especially one who has dedicated most of her life to the church, this medal was a big deal. She wears it with tremendous pride.

L10

This is the effect Lil has on people. Her good humour is so infectious. I like this photo because it captures just that. Top Tip : Some of the best photos happen when you forget about the camera and are captured just being yourself. And you don’t need a medal from his holiness to be well-deserving of some nice photos.

L11

Finally, Ethan adores her; as does every other child who has ever come within hugging distance. There’s always a little box of sweets and chocolate in the house for the kids. And 7up. Always. She’s been a second mammy to a lot of us: Coffeys, Kellys and O’Briens. Ethan likes to refer to her as ‘Queen Elizabeth’ and sure, she’ll forever be Marie O’Brien’s Lilly-Logs :-) Maj xoxo

Irene + Marcus

Sunday, April 1st, 2012

When we did Marcus and Irene’s pre wedding shoot a couple of weeks ago, we wanted to do something a little special. You see these are a bit of a special couple….not because they are heading off to get hitched in Vegas, YES VEGAS, but because Irene is also one of my best friends.

When I mentioned she would have to get some pre wedding photos done, just to get them used to the camera, reluctant wasn’t the word. In all our years of being friends I had never taken photos of her or Marcus. I assured her I would just take a couple of quick shots of them, ten minutes max I told her (yeah right Irene!) She reminded me of this as we left her house the morning of the shoot with half her sitting room in tow…….

Where else could we do the shoot only Ballyglunin Railway Station, this is where her Dad TP grew up, his father being the station master.  We brought along some of Kitty’s cool vintage chairs just to make them feel a little more at home…

Hats

Sunday, July 10th, 2011

Girls it’s all about the hats…..pink hats, purple hats, big hats, small hats, spikey hats, furry hats…. you just have to have a hat!  I’m a big lover of hats, i love photographing them, i love drawing them and i even managed to fit in a Milinery course this year. So, when our local miliner Caithriona King asked me to take some snazzy new snaps for her snazzy new website i was thrilled  and dying to see how the professionals do it.

WELL i wasn’t dissappointed that’s for sure, when i arrived at her studio i was like a kid in a toy shop. Such an array of hats i never saw.  Like myself, Caithriona did her time at Art College and you only have to look to look at her hats to see she is very creative. Her pieces posess all the elemants of any good design. They are so rich in colour, texture, shape, i could go on……

Caithriona’s brief was simple, ‘I just want something different’ she said, ‘I don’t want the usual hats on a white polystyrene head, i think i’d like to do them outside’ Off we went for a look around for a suitable location and found the perfect spot. Now all we needed was the models.

Hats-9

Meet Caithriona, yes this is she in the picture above. Caithriona’s sister-in-law Laura was also drafted in to help out. Who needs models when you look like these pair?

Not that you’d know from the pics but we were avoiding torrential rain AND being hit by lightning! Our lovely July weather. Poor Laura did get a teenchy bit wet but wasn’t it all worth it in the end?

Caithriona caters for all tastes so be sure to check out www.caithrionakingdesigns.com if it’s a gorgeous hat or head piece you’re after!

The ‘G’ in G.A.A.

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

What are them birds on about now, ye are all saying? Oh they’ve lost the plot entirely at Fotissima HQ this time. They put the ‘Gaelic’ into The Althletic Association? Surley not. No, Ladies + Gentlemen, but we DID photograph some rather pretty Athletes from the Association in The G Hotel in Galway. Still confused? Hardly surprising really. Let us explain…

Glamorous?! Hardly an adjective much bandied about in the same breath as the GAA one would be forgiven for thinking. So. What would happen if the ladies of the GAA got make-overs? You know the way them poor girleens have a bit of a bad press sometimes. Playin’ a so-called man’s game like. There could be a general impression that these girls are all Tomboys and couldn’t dress up and look all ladylike and fabulous to save their lives (Naturally us here at Fotissima would NEVER have thought such a thing though, we can assure you). Katheryn Lynch’s ‘Liz Hurley’ character hardly helps matters, although we do admit to having a little giggle every now and then on that one.

Anyway. Wasn’t it about time the potential of Hair, Make-Up, Styling and a daycent photograph for these girls was realised in order to bust this particular myth wide open. We thought so too. So we agreed to shoot the photographs when we were approached by Paul from Zenith Hairdressing in Galway to get involved in the project. And The Ladies GAA Calender was born. A charity close to many women’s hearts was chosen : Breast Cancer Awareness.

Now, that all sounds pretty simple, doesn’t it? Listen here now. NOTHING is simple when it comes to coordinating a bunch of women. Nothing. So Maree McNamara form Masterplan Marketing came on board to sort us all out. Blessed with lots and lots of patience is Maree we can tell ye, to be dealing with the lot of us. But deal with us she did and we spent two hectic days shooting in The G with a bunch of very talented people and some fabulous girls.

Paul and his team from Zenith in Galway was on hair. Melvina Barrett on Make-up and Georgina Vahey, styling. Fair play to the Management and Staff of The G Hotel for agreeing to let us shoot there in the first place and for putting up with us for two days as we mooched around their luxurious location seeking out the best light and backdrop for our photo of each girl. It truly is a dream location for a shoot. We did try to be as discreet as we could with all the gear we had in tow. We think we were…but that could all be in our heads mind you. We certainly provided some light entertainment for the hotel guests who happened to be there at the time. They were pretending not to stare but, to be fair, it was hard not to. And special thank you to our photographer friend Andy Newman for assisting us on the day. Cheers Andy!

‘Glamorous’ was the only brief we were given. ‘Make them look glamorous’. Did we manage it? Well have a look at the photos and let us know. All proceeds from the calendar go to a fantastic cause and all the team involved gave their services free of charge, so it would be brilliant to see it being supported by the public. Get out there and grab yourselves a copy.

Thanks a million to all those involved, including the gorgeous girls themselves. We had a fab time. G.A.A. Ladies…you ROCK!!

We recently did some actor headshots with the lads and lassies from Galway Youth Theatre. It’s not everyday we photographers get to work with such cool, hip, vivacious young-uns. Teenage Kicks

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

L10

Teenagers these days, eh. Don’t you just love ‘em? They are fun. They are fabulous. They are funky. We could photograph them all day. It may have something to do with the fact that we’re still waaaay too in touch with our inner teenager, but sure what harm. *nostalgic sigh*

This is the beautiful Clodagh. Off we went to Galway the other day to do some cool shots for her and show her just how gorgeous she truly is. Looking at these photographs you would be forgiven for thinking she is a professional model. ‘She’s not?’ we hear you gasp in disbelief. No. This was her first ever photo shoot. But, talk about a natural. We wouldn’t be at all surprised to see her in the pages of a glossy magazine in the future (ye heard i here first). Kate Moss, how are ya.

So. Teens. Celebrate this time of your life. It will go by oh-so-fast, even though, right now it may feel like you will NEVER be independent and free from them annoying grown-ups (don’t mind them). You will. Oh-too-soon. While you’re waiting, be sure and get some drop-dead-gorgeous pics of your teenage-self so that you can have a good old remember every time you look at them. These are the photos which will become all the more precious as the years go by (Trust us. We’re wise old birds!). Don’t let these years pass undocumented…seriously.

L13

Capture yourself as you are now. Don’t worry, you don’t have to be Ireland’s Next Top Model or anything. We will help you to look and feel fantastic in front of the camera, even if it means having a good old rummage around in the wardrobe with you to help you get some ‘looks’ together. No bother to us, we do love a good rummage ! We can hook you up with an a make-up artist too while we’re at it, no hassle.

L07

Email us anytime you feel like giving it a go. Bring a friend or two if you’re not feeling brave enough to do it all on your own-ee-oh. You know you want to! Ahhh. Go on. Go on. Go on.

Rock your frocks off!

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

Sandra Gillen became a fan of our Facebook page and innocently remarked one day that she loved our photography so much, it made her feel like taking the wedding dress out and doing it all again, but in a much funkier fashion. Whooosh. We were all over it. Music to our ears a chailín. What are you waiting for?! Get it ON!

So. Take away the pressures of the wedding day and add Lola & Maj’s styling techniques extraordinaire and *voilà!*  you get yourself a fabulous ‘Rock The Frock’ session and a set of the coolest photos you never thought possible. You might even have a bit of craic in the process…it has been known to happen.

Sandra is gorgeous. She got married a few years ago and is quite the busy lady with four small children and a budding Make Up Artistry business-she did her own make-up for the shoot btw; check it OUT; www.skelliemakeup.com. Sandra was game for a laugh and was so patient with us as we made her try out a whole range of different looks to find the perfect ones. Our personal favourite is the ‘Madame Bridget’ look (as coined by Sandra herself when she collapsed laughing at herself in the mirror hehehe!) with the little blue socks and Kurt Geiger shoes. High fashion or WHA’! We think these photos would be at home on the cover of any magazine (ah, well, now come on, not ‘Horse and Hound’ or anything but ye know what we mean). Work it Sandy, we do love these pics!

We chose a location for the photos that you certainly couldn’t set foot in on the ‘real’ day. Gruuun-geeey. We even ventured up the rather dodgy ladder, conscious that we may not be actually able to get back down again without professional help. 999/ Fire Brigade/Speed dial…Just in case. Ah sure, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Thanks to the young fella who told us about this secret location when we were doing our research…some of you reading this actually visit this spot on a regular basis we suspect, but don’t worry lads, the secret’s safe with us, and ye’ve made it so cosy…em…in a filthy dirty sort of way like!

It does take a bit of time to create a beautiful set of images such as these but we believe that they are worth every minute of it. Time is something that is in short supply on the ‘Big Day’ though, so why not treat yourself to a ‘Rock The Frock’ session, where it can be all about the photos, and the wedding day can be all about everything else…
